Do the Thing!

Updated: Apr 5

We all have a that thing we want to do. Our big dream or goal. We work slowly toward reaching wach new step needed to get closer to that goal. Then …… life happens, the goal gets further away. We get back up and keep at it.

Sometimes that get back up part really sucks though….. it’s freaking hard!! That’s when we tell ourselves stuff like “if it wasn’t hard everyone would do it” or “This will make you appreciate it that much more when you finally do it”. So we get back up. And get knocked back down. Over and over and over. SUCH IS LIFE.

Don’t get discouraged. Don’t compare yourself to others. Don’t think “why even try?”!! You can either get back up, or stay on the ground. Do you really want to stay down there? Heck no! So that makes it simple to get back up.

You could also change the way you think about things. Instead of seeing setbacks as something that knocks you down, try just maneuvering around or through the obstacle. These are the things that fill the story.

Think about any great road trip you have been on. But take out everything that happened along the way. Which story is more interesting? The one where you were here then there blah blah blah or the one where you got a flat tire at 3 am in the rain and the dog got out and took off? Sure….. that experience isn’t one you would ever want to happen…. But dang dude you got your dog back, didn’t die, and have some great advice for anyone you know who might be in the same situation in the future. Plus you have a crazy story to tell.

Your story is everything. It is who you are. And your “thing” is where you want to be. Your story is probably the very reason for why you want to do the thing anyways. Is it not?

I’m not saying you should jump into things without thoughtfully planning things out. You should set your road map up for success. Just don’t freak out when your road map gets blown out the car window right after the dog jumps out while you are changing a tire in the rain.

You never know what will happen, that’s why you should plan for the unexpected. And go ahead and start lining up all your ducks. You do not need every duck in the “right” place to start doing what you want to do. Even ducks fly without a complete V sometimes, or a lopsided one. (I think that's geese but you get the point) But they keep on keeping on anyways.

No one is going to believe in yourself more than you. No one wants you to achieve your goal more than you. No one can decide what will happen around them. We can only control how we deal with the situations we are faced with, not the situation itself.

It’s hard.

It’s scary.

It’s out of that comfy zone.

No one gets strong by dealing with only weak things.

No one is brave without being scared.

No one is ever comfy 24-7. (You have to work to pay for the comfy)

So do the thing.

Don't wait for the right time, or the right person, or anything. Just start. Do it. Whatever million steps must be taken to begin, do those steps. The list will be revised. Keep the list going.

You can look back and say you tried, and tried again.

Or you can look back and say.......... I should have tried harder.

It's your thing!!

What else are you going to do?
